| The best reason is that flying a helicopter is more impressive than flying a plane! Rotorcraft flight is not much more complex than airplane flight, but it does require much more intense and sustained concentration. Most helicopters lack autopilot systems, and cannot be left without pilot guidance for more than a few seconds (airplanes can typically be left without guidance for up to 30 seconds without autopilot). Flying a helicopter is a more challenging experience than flying a plane.
There is a dire shortage of helicopter pilots in the world. There is huge demand for military, air ambulance, sightseeing, and oil rig helicopter pilots (it sounds odd, but as land-based oil supplies dry up, offshore drilling is increasing. The easiest way to travel to a rig is via helicopter). Other benefits include being able to see the surroundings more completely, to hover and maneuver quickly, to fly low, and to land pretty much anywhere. These abilities allow for a more satisfying flying experience. There are drawbacks though. Helicopters consume fuel quickly, and many models cannot fly long distances. Inexpensive models available to private pilots are very poor at carrying any amount of weight. Even the inexpensive models are expensive compared to entry-level airplanes. |
